What Is UVDTF — and Why Is It Different from Regular Vinyl?
UVDTF (UV Direct-to-Film) is a type of transfer that uses UV-cured ink printed onto a special film. Unlike regular vinyl, UVDTF wraps don't require heat to apply — they're pressure-sensitive and bond directly to smooth, non-porous surfaces like glass, acrylic, and ceramic.
That means no heat gun, no Cricut, no weeding. Just clean, press, and peel. The result is a vibrant, full-color design that looks like it was printed directly onto your cup.
What You'll Need
- Your 16oz glass can (or other smooth, non-porous surface)
- Your UVDTF wrap from Chris's Craft Co.
- A lint-free cloth or microfiber towel
- Clean hands!
Do NOT use rubbing alcohol to clean your surface — more on that below.
Step-by-Step Application Guide
Step 1: Clean Your Glass Can
Use a lint-free cloth to wipe down the surface of your glass can. Remove any lint, dust, fingerprints, or oils. This is the most important step — any debris under the wrap can cause lifting or bubbles.
⚠️ Important: Do NOT use rubbing alcohol or any alcohol-based cleaner. Alcohol can leave a residue that prevents the wrap from bonding properly to the glass.
Step 2: Position the Wrap
Before peeling anything, hold the wrap up to your glass can and get a feel for placement. UVDTF wraps are designed to wrap around 16oz glass cans, so line up the edge where you want it to start.
Take your time here — once the adhesive touches the glass, it bonds quickly!
Step 3: Carefully Line Up the Transfer
Starting at one edge, carefully line up the transfer against the glass. Keep it straight and level. If your wrap has a top and bottom, make sure you have it oriented correctly before pressing down.
Step 4: Press Firmly
Using your fingers, press the wrap firmly onto the glass, working from one side to the other. Apply even pressure across the entire design to ensure full contact with the surface. Smooth out any air bubbles as you go by pressing from the center outward.
Step 5: Peel the Top Layer Slowly
Once the wrap is fully pressed down, it's time to remove the top transfer film. Peel it back slowly at a low angle — don't yank it off. If any part of the design starts to lift with the film, press it back down and continue peeling more slowly.
And that's it — you're done! 🎉
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using alcohol to clean: This is the #1 mistake. Stick to a dry lint-free cloth or plain water.
- Rushing the peel: Peeling too fast can pull the design off the glass. Slow and steady wins the race.
- Applying to a wet or cold surface: Make sure your glass is dry and at room temperature before applying.
- Skipping the press: Not pressing firmly enough leads to edges that lift over time. Really work those edges!
- Applying to textured surfaces: UVDTF wraps work best on smooth, non-porous surfaces. Matte or frosted glass may not hold as well.
Care Instructions
To keep your UVDTF wrap looking its best:
- Hand wash only — avoid soaking or submerging in water for extended periods
- Do not put in the dishwasher
- Avoid scrubbing directly over the design
- Store out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve color vibrancy
